The Palliative Care Education Team aims to provide an in-service and community based programme that offers educational opportunities to all health professionals in Southland and the Wakatipu basin across specialist and general providers and the wider community.
The education provided aims to be holistic, accessible and relevant to current practice.

Lecture Webinars
Held on the first Thursday of each month 7.30-8.30am via webinars at your place of work or home.

Hospice NZ Syringe Driver Competency
Theoretical and practical, interactive experience to assist Registered and Enrolled Nurses, to safely manage continuous subcutaneous infusions.
If you are within the Southland/Wakatipu region you can now enrol to complete the Hospice New Zealand endorsed Syringe Driver Competency Programme online. There are 3 parts to this programme:
- Online – Theory
- Medication calculation (available from late March)
- Practical competency
Until the online Medication Theory Assessment is online, on enrolment, we will email a medication calculation question sheet for you to complete and email back to us for assessment. Please complete the theory section online first. Please email to education@hospicesouthland.org.nz

July - Foundations of Spiritual Care Course
Spirituality is deeply individual, personally defined and challenging to express. What gives a person meaning, value and a sense of self?
As healthcare providers we must be mindful of the critical role spiritual wellness plays in the quality of life and our role in caring for that aspect of a patient and their family & whanau. This course encourages us on a journey of development of ones own spirituality and the impact on the care we provide.
Course contains 2 sessions (Must be able to attend both)

Fundamentals of Palliative Care
The Fundamentals of Palliative Care is a series of learning packages designed for any healthcare worker – registered nd non-registered staff – who are caring for people with a palliative care need.
It provides the learner with a broad overview of how to provide palliative care to people in their last days of life.
The programme is delivered via a blended model of learning, consisting of 4 online modules which include reflection exercises and 1 workshop.
The online modules consist of:
Essence – This is a foundation module and is a pre-requiste to enrolling in further modules in the programme. It covers palliative care concepts and the culture of care.
The palliative care approach – 1 module covering communication, ethics and spirituality.
Managing pain and long term illness – 2 modules covering pain, other symptoms and pharacology. Chronic illness and dementia.
Care and support at the end of life – module covering last days of life, grief, loss and caring for ourselves.
