About Hospice Southland

Hospice Southland provides specialist palliative care to those with a life-limiting illness in Southland and the Wakatipu Basin, free of charge, and ideally in their setting of choice.

We have a six bed In-Patient Unit, and we also care for around 120 patients in the community at any given time.

Hospice palliative care focuses on quality of life, responding to each patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Family life is deeply affected when a loved one has a life-limiting illness, and support for families is also an intrinsic part of hospice care.

Hospice Southland Charitable Trust receives less than half its funding from the Ministry of Health, which leaves a shortfall of $3 million to be raised each year to keep our services free of charge 24/7. This shortfall is met through the generosity of the Southland and Wakatipu communities through grants, bequests, donations fundraisers and events.

Treaty of Waitangi

Hospice Southland acknowledges the Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi) as a foundation document of New Zealand. In recognising the three principles of the Treaty – partnership, protection and participation – we will deliver our services at all levels of the organisation within the spirit of the Treaty.

Our Vision

Everyone living in Southland and the Wakatipu Basin has access to the highest quality palliative care 24/7.
